How to Build Healthy Communication with Your Child

Gaining one’s trust always helps in having confidence in them. Children are gifts that must be nurtured in the most graceful way.

Building a healthy communication with your child is important for their emotional development, trust, and overall well-being.

Here are 5 tips to help in building and maintaining a healthy communication with your child.

I. Be an active listener: Don’t be too busy to give your attention to your child when they want to talk to you. Give them a compassionate eye contact and present a body language that shows that you’re ready to engage. Note that it’s rude to allow electronic devices to distract you whenever they are with you.

Do all that is possible by you to encourage them to express themselves openly and listen without interrupting them.

II. Use age-appropriate language: Use language they can understand fast enough without ambiguity. Parenting is about not giving up, be patient and never get tired to explain things further if needed.

III. Practice empathy and understanding: Always remember that at some point in your life, you’re just like your child. Try to see things from your child’s perspective and acknowledge their emotions. Be their comforter in their struggles and celebrate them in their successes. Anytime they speak, please focus on understanding and providing comfort not trying to solve the issue immediately.

IV. Encourage problem-solving decision-making: Assist them to think critically, teach them to make choices by involving them in decision-making processes. Encourage them to express their opinions and find solutions to problems.

V. Lead by example: Sometimes, children may like they are not listening to you, but they are seeing you. Model healthy communication by being respectful, honest, and open in your interactions.

Healthy Communication with Your Child is always a process, don’t give up on them, and be open to being a better parent.
